A woman has been arrested for allegedly setting fire to the Grace Mountain Chapel auditorium in Accra, home of the popular Alpha Hour prayer program led by Pastor Elvis Agyemang.
Alpha Hour, which began in February 2022, is a daily one-hour prayer session streamed globally on platforms including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Zoom, and attracts thousands of participants across Ghana and beyond.
The incident occurred on the night of February 9, when the suspect reportedly entered the church under the guise of prayer and poured a flammable liquid on chairs near the altar. CCTV footage captured her actions, but church security quickly contained the blaze, preventing serious damage or injuries.
Pastor Agyemang has temporarily suspended in-person services at the auditorium, assuring followers that prayers will continue online while repairs are made. “If you come here today, it will not be open, but it will not stop us. We will fix the place, and prayers will still go on,” he said.
Authorities are investigating the motive and whether the woman acted alone. Police are treating the case as a serious criminal matter.
