Accra: Police launch manhunt after Kotoku onion market shooting incident

The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt to arrest individuals involved in a disturbance and unlawful discharge of firearms at the Kotoku Onion Market in the Adjen Kotoku area of the Amasaman Division.

According to the Accra Regional Police Command, tensions broke out among five onion sellers’ associations over disagreements concerning the distribution of onions supplied by foreign traders, leading to unrest at the market.

On April 6, 2026, the situation escalated into a clash during which gunshots were heard from an unidentified location. Police officers quickly responded to the scene, but the perpetrators could not be immediately traced.

The Police said reinforcements were deployed to the area to maintain order while engagements were held with leaders of the various associations to help calm tensions. Patrols have since been intensified to prevent further disturbances.

A statement from the Command, issued by Head of Public Affairs, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, noted that efforts are underway to ensure accountability.

The Police confirmed that they have engaged leaders of the associations and secured their cooperation in maintaining peace and order.

The Command cautioned the public against violence and the illegal use of firearms, urging stakeholders to resolve disputes through lawful means.

“The Accra Regional Police Command cautions the public against engaging in acts of violence or unlawful use of firearms and urges all parties to resolve disputes through lawful means,” the statement said.

Authorities further assured residents that the situation is under control and continues to be closely monitored as investigations proceed.
