National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for deciding to hold its flagbearer election before polling stations, constituency, regional and national executive race.
He described that as a strategy to protect the positions of the party’s current national executives.
His comments come after the NPP announced to conduct its presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026, ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The decision was made at a National Executive Committee and National Council meeting on Tuesday, June 17.
Speaking on Ekosiisen on Asempa FM on Tuesday, June 17, Mr. Kyere-Duah alleged that the timing of the primaries was intentionally set to avoid internal party elections that could unseat the incumbent executives.
“Everything happening in the NPP is well-orchestrated to benefit and protect the current national executives,” he said. “If the party were to conduct elections at the branch, constituency, regional, and national levels before the flagbearer race, there would be a tsunami. This is a protectionist approach.”
Mr. Kyere-Duah further explained that by allowing the flagbearer election to proceed before party-wide elections, the executives are betting on aligning themselves with the eventual winner to secure their positions.
“If the flagbearer is elected and works in tandem with the current national executives, it becomes a matter of ‘you scratch my back, I scratch yours.’ It’s a strategic move by the National Council to protect the interests of the current leadership,” he added.
