Three suspected armed robbers were shot dead in a police operation at Manso Akwasiso in 2022, while a fourth suspect who escaped has now been jailed 25 years for his role in the attack.
The Bekwai Circuit Court sentenced 30-year-old Dominic Ofori, also known as Fanta, to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after he pleaded guilty to robbery contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The case stems from a March 20, 2022 incident at a mining site in Manso Akwasiso in the Ashanti South Region.
According to police, intelligence gathered by the Manso Adubia District Command indicated that a group of armed men from Manso Abodom were planning to storm the site and rob the owner of gold concentrate.
Police mounted a coordinated operation and laid an ambush at the location. At about 5:30 pm, four armed men reportedly arrived at the site, fired indiscriminately and made away with gold concentrate belonging to the miners.
Officers on surveillance moved in, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Three of the suspects — Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif and Gideon Takyi — sustained gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead on arrival at St Martins Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum.
Dominic Ofori managed to flee the scene and remained on the run for nearly four years until his arrest on February 16, 2026. He was subsequently arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court, where he admitted the offence and was sentenced accordingly.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling violent crime and ensuring offenders are brought to justice.
