The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that its parliamentary primaries for the Tamale Central Constituency by-election will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025.
In a statement signed by the Party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC outlined the roadmap for the contest, covering nominations, vetting, and election procedures.
According to the guidelines, aspirants are required to pay GH¢5,000 for nomination forms and GH¢40,000 as a filing fee. However, female aspirants and persons with disabilities will receive a 50 percent reduction on the filing fee.
The Party emphasized that forms can only be obtained and submitted at its Northern Regional Office, and payments must be made directly into the NDC’s official account at UMB Bank, Adabraka branch, warning that cheques and drafts will not be accepted.
Primaries Timetable
- Opening of Nominations: August 21, 2025
- Closing of Nominations: August 23, 2025
- Vetting of Aspirants: August 26, 2025

The by-election became necessary following the tragic death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
The Electoral Commission has since fixed the main by-election for September 30, 2025.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared that it will not field a candidate in the contest, citing respect for the late MP and the period of national mourning.
Political observers, however, suggest the decision also reflects the constituency’s long-standing status as an NDC stronghold.
The NDC has urged aspirants and their supporters to conduct their campaigns in a spirit of fairness, unity, and decorum, stressing the need to protect the integrity of the Party’s internal democratic processes.
