The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of obstructing their attempts to record the serial numbers of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
This accusation comes in the wake of the theft of some BVR kits from the EC headquarters, which has raised concerns about the integrity of the voter registration process.
Speaking at a press conference in Acra and addressed by the National Chairman Mr. Johnson Asiedu-Nketia explained that despite posing thirty-five questions to the EC regarding the stolen equipment, the NDC further alleges that the EC has failed to provide satisfactory answers. Consequently, the NDC has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to initiate an independent bipartisan investigation into the matter.
Expressing suspicion that the stolen kits could be used for illegal voter registration, the NDC has instructed its registration agents across the country to document the serial numbers of all deployed BVR kits.

This measure, he said is aim at tracing registration data and personnel operating the kits, thereby preventing potential tampering with the voter register.
However, the NDC claims that the EC is resisting their efforts to record the serial numbers, raising questions about the commission’s transparency and motives.
Despite the EC’s assurance that serial numbers of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) are recorded on election day, the NDC insists on documenting BVR kit serial numbers as well.
The NDC has warned that its registration agents will resist any attempts by the EC to impede their efforts to document BVR kit serial numbers.
Mr. Asiedu-Nketia emphasizes the importance of transparency in the electoral process and urges Civil Society Organizations, chiefs, opinion leaders, and faith-based organizations to support their call for fairness and accountability from the EC.
In conclusion, the NDC calls on the EC to answer their questions regarding the stolen biometric equipment and allow their agents to record BVR kit serial numbers to ensure the integrity of the voter registration exercise.
He further emphasized that the 2024 elections will not be business as usual and urge all stakeholders to demand transparency and fairness for peaceful elections.
