Government appointees seeking to contest positions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be required to step down from their current roles at least six clear months before filing nomination forms.
This was announced by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, during a media briefing on Thursday, January 29, 2026.
According to him, the NDC has a broad and capable membership base, making it unnecessary for individuals to combine government appointments with party leadership ambitions.
He explained that the party believes in shared responsibility and wants to avoid a situation where a few individuals dominate multiple roles at the same time.
“NDC has got so many more people who can hold our position and do an excellent job, if not even better job. So we must have the same principle at all moment. I think it’s simply an issue of reducing the level of greed, you understand? So if you want to work for the party, you leave your position in government and come and contest and win. Then we know you are fully dedicated.”
Mr. Kwetey noted that the decision is intended to ensure fairness and full dedication to party work, stressing that anyone who wishes to serve the party at an executive level must be prepared to make that commitment exclusively.
He added that holding a government position while seeking party office creates divided attention and undermines effective party organization.
He further indicated that the policy reflects a broader principle gaining ground in governance reforms, where public officials are increasingly discouraged from occupying overlapping roles.
The General Secretary emphasized that party work is demanding and requires total focus, adding that several party leaders are already serving without holding any government appointments.
The directive, he said, is part of efforts to promote accountability, reduce internal competition for power, and ensure that those elected into party offices are fully invested in advancing the NDC’s objectives and rebuilding the country.
