The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially clinched victory in the Akwatia Constituency by-election, following the death of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.
Bernard Bediako Baidoo secured 18,199 votes, representing 54.30% of the total ballots cast, defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, who garnered 15,235 votes (45.46%). Owusu Patrick of the Liberal People’s Party received 82 votes (0.24%).
Voting, conducted across 119 polling stations in 21 electoral areas, concluded at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
The Electoral Commission (EC) deployed 484 temporary officers to oversee the process, ensuring ballots were properly issued, verified, and counted.
Security across the constituency was heightened, with over 5,500 Ghana Police Service personnel, including a mobile prison van, deployed to maintain order. Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, praised the professionalism of officers on the ground, describing the exercise as peaceful and orderly despite earlier isolated incidents of tension.
The final results largely mirrored projections by Global Info Analytics, which had forecast a 53%-47% lead for the NDC candidate over the NPP’s Asumadu. Political analysts say the outcome provides a strong boost for the governing party and offers insights into voter sentiment in the Eastern Region ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Despite some areas reporting low voter turnout, the EC affirmed that the election was transparent and credible, reinforcing Ghana’s reputation for conducting peaceful polls.
The Akwatia by-election, long considered a swing seat, was closely watched nationwide, with both parties treating the race as a key indicator of their grassroots support.
