The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor, has insisted that the Akwatia by-election will be decided on development, not emotions.
According to him, attempts to frame the contest as one of sympathy or personal popularity are misplaced, as residents are more concerned about who can champion tangible progress for the constituency.
More than 52,000 registered voters are expected to take part in the by-election as voting as currently underway.
He argued that the NDC’s candidate, Lawyer Bernard Oduro Takyi, is best placed to deliver because the party currently forms the government, making it easier to channel resources to the constituency.
Dr. Kevor added that Akwatia’s long-standing challenges — including poor infrastructure, inadequate social amenities, and limited economic opportunities despite its mining heritage — require bold leadership and a new direction.
“This election is not about sympathy. Sympathy is low on the issues. It is about development, and rational voters know who can bring that development to Akwatia,” Dr. Kevor said.
“Voters understand that electing an NPP candidate will not change the balance in Parliament. It will not give the NPP any extra advantage. But supporting the NDC candidate gives Akwatia a stronger voice and a clearer path to the development it deserves,” he said.
He maintained that the NDC is confident of victory, stressing that voters understand electing an opposition candidate will not alter the balance of power in Parliament or guarantee development for the area.
