Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has criticised the decision to proceed with a rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election, describing the process as hasty and harmful to democratic norms.
He argued that the situation surrounding former MP Mathew Nyindam has not fully gone through the courts, noting that Nyindam has filed an appeal at the High Court and a judicial review at the Supreme Court—none of which has been determined.
According to him, pushing ahead with a fresh poll while these matters are pending amounts to undermining due process.
The controversy began after the Tamale High Court annulled the Kpandai results, ruling that voting irregularities affected the outcome.
Acting on that decision, the Electoral Commission set December 30, 2025 for the rerun.
The move triggered a sharp response from the Minority caucus, who stormed Parliament in black attire and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Clerk’s letter declaring the seat vacant, insisting the court processes were not yet concluded.
Dr Bawumia echoed similar concerns, saying the state must not use its power to “railroad political opponents” and urged the authorities to pause the process until all legal avenues have been fully exhausted.
