President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, and the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, to withdraw their Private Members’ Bill seeking a full repeal of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) Act.
The Bill was introduced on Wednesday, December 10, by Ayariga and Dafeamekpor, proposing the dismantling of the OSP—an institution established in 2017 to lead independent anti-corruption prosecutions.
The move immediately sparked public debate, with critics questioning the timing and intent behind efforts to dissolve a key accountability body.
In a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening, not weakening, anti-corruption institutions.
He emphasized that the directive aligns with his remarks to the National Peace Council, where he called for a more effective and trusted OSP.
The President also urged the OSP to intensify its work, restore public confidence, and pursue corruption cases decisively in line with its founding mandate.
