With just days to the Akwatia by-election, a new survey by Global Info Analytics has given the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a slim but decisive lead over his New Patriotic Party (NPP) rival, Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
The poll, conducted between August 27 and 28 with responses from 2,050 voters, places Baidoo at 53 percent against Asumadu’s 47 percent.
Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, said the NDC candidate’s rise is being driven by strong support from students in senior high schools and tertiary institutions, along with constituents eager for more development in the area.
He added that under the “committed model,” which reflects a minimum expected performance, Baidoo still maintains the six-point advantage.
The September 2 by-election was triggered by the sudden passing of the constituency’s MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi. The contest has since been billed as a crucial test of strength between the governing NDC and the opposition NPP in the Eastern Region.
Meanwhile, security remains a major concern. Police in the Eastern South Region announced the arrest of 10 suspects and the seizure of nine weapons during operations in the constituency ahead of the polls.
Despite the poll’s findings, both the NDC and NPP remain upbeat about their chances, setting the stage for a fiercely fought election on Tuesday.
