The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that it will hold parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia Constituency on Monday, August 4, 2025, to elect a new parliamentary candidate following the death of sitting MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey dated, Friday, July 25, the party confirmed that nomination forms will be available for collection at the Eastern Regional Office beginning Monday, July 28.
Aspirants are required to return completed forms to the same office after filing.
The party has outlined clear procedural guidelines, including a requirement that the full filing fee must be deposited into the NDC’s official account at UMB Bank, Adabraka Branch, before candidates are granted access to the official delegates’ list.
However, according to the party, no cheques or bankers’ drafts will be accepted
As part of its commitment to gender equity and inclusion, the NDC announced a 50% reduction in the filing fee for female aspirants and persons living with disabilities (PWDs).
Filing of nominations is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, while vetting of aspirants will take place on Thursday, July 31.
The final internal election will be conducted on August 4, pending any last-minute adjustments.
The party has also urged all contestants and their supporters to conduct their campaigns with respect, unity, and a commitment to the democratic values of the NDC.
The by-election in Akwatia has become necessary after the tragic passing of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi on July 7, 2025.
His death created a vacancy in one of the Eastern Region’s most politically active constituencies, prompting swift action by the party to fill the seat.
