The Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant is back in full operation after several months of disruption caused by heavy siltation and poor water quality, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced.
According to the Managing Director of GWL, Adam Mutawakilu, engineers have successfully restored the plant’s capacity to produce at 100% following a major reconfiguration of the pumping system.
The recovery comes after persistent technical difficulties triggered by unusually high turbidity levels — a condition where the water becomes too cloudy for treatment.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, October 20, Mr. Mutawakilu explained that the rehabilitation involved moving the pumps from the riverbed to the surface treatment zone, which has now allowed water to flow steadily through the system.
“We had to do re-engineering by bringing the pumps up. That is why we are now able to produce 100% water,” he said. “The Kwanyako Treatment Plant is now working, with no high turbidity beyond the capacity of the plant.”
Mr. Mutawakilu expressed concern about the sustainability of the progress, noting that sediment buildup and declining river flow remain major threats to continuous operation.
He called for private sector and community support to help desilt the pump intakes and protect the water source.
The restoration of the Kwanyako facility is expected to bring relief to thousands of residents in the Central Region who have endured months of irregular supply.
