Government has ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged assault of a JoyNews journalist and an eyewitness by a soldier during a demolition exercise at a warehouse reportedly connected to businessman Daniel McKorley, also known as McDan.
A statement by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Wednesday, July 30, condemned the actions of the soldier as “utterly unacceptable,” stressing that such behavior has no place in a democratic society.
The incident involved JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony, who was reportedly assaulted while covering the demolition, and allegedly detained along with McDan and three others.
Reports also suggest the victims were forced to kneel at gunpoint.
President John Dramani Mahama has tasked the Ministry of Defence and the National Security Coordinator to urgently investigate the matter and impose disciplinary sanctions against the officer involved.
The statement reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to media freedom and journalist safety.
“A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse.,” said Kwakye Ofosu. “Government also reiterates our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all Ghanaian citizens, whose rights must always be protected.”
