The Ministry of Transport has begun work towards determining the viability of a proposed coastal water transport service linking communities along Ghana’s coastline.

In a Facebook post on Friday, August 14, the Ministry said it had signed a contract with Vision Consult, in collaboration with KPMG, to undertake feasibility studies for the proposed service.

According to the Ministry, the six-month contract will assess the viability of establishing a coastal water transport route “from Keta in the Volta Region to Axim in the Western Region.”

The consultants are expected to conduct the necessary assessments and submit their findings and recommendations to the government at the end of the six-month period.

The Ministry said “the outcome of the feasibility study will guide Government’s decision on the viability and potential development of the proposed coastal water transport service.”

The proposed initiative is aimed at expanding Ghana’s transportation options, particularly for communities located along the coast.

The Ministry explained that the study will provide the government with the information needed to determine whether the proposed route can be developed into a viable coastal transport service.

If approved and eventually implemented, the Keta-Axim route could provide an alternative means of transportation along the coast and complement existing road and other transport networks.

The feasibility study is therefore expected to provide the basis for determining the technical and commercial viability of the proposed service before any decision is taken on its development.
