The Ministry of Education has called an urgent meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) as efforts intensify to end the ongoing strike by university administrators.
The meeting, scheduled for today, Monday, October 12, 2026, is expected to provide a platform for the parties to discuss the dispute and work towards an amicable resolution.
In a statement, the Ministry said it remained committed to addressing labour concerns through negotiations and constructive engagement.
The Ministry called on all parties to approach the discussions in good faith, emphasising the implications of the industrial action for students, university communities and the country as a whole.
It also urged GAUA’s leadership to seize the opportunity to work with relevant stakeholders towards ending the impasse.
The strike has raised concerns over the start of the 2026/2027 academic year, with two major public universities announcing changes to their reopening schedules.
The University of Ghana postponed its October 12 reopening, saying a new date would be announced later. KNUST also postponed its scheduled October 13 reopening indefinitely, explicitly citing the strike’s effect on its administrative operations.
The disruptions have placed the resolution of the dispute at the centre of efforts to restore normal administrative and academic activities at affected institutions.
The Ministry expressed optimism that the scheduled talks would help resolve the disagreement and facilitate a return to normal operations.
“Government remains hopeful that the meeting will yield a positive outcome and facilitate a swift return to normal academic and administrative activities across affected tertiary institutions,” it said.
