Three pre-tertiary teacher unions have suspended their nationwide strike following engagements with the Council of State and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), paving the way for teachers to return to the classroom on Monday.

The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Tanko Musah, announced the directive at a press conference, urging teachers across the country to resume their duties on Monday.

The industrial action involved GNAT, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).

The unions embarked on the strike over outstanding concerns relating to promotion arrears, the implementation of the deprived-area allowance and delays in concluding negotiations on their conditions of service and Collective Agreement.

The suspension follows a series of engagements involving the unions and state institutions seeking to resolve the dispute and restore normal teaching and learning activities in public pre-tertiary schools.

The Council of State and the FWSC have been involved in discussions aimed at addressing the outstanding demands, including issues surrounding salary adjustments for promoted teachers and the proposed allowances.

Mr Musah’s announcement is expected to pave the way for teachers to return to their classrooms while discussions on the outstanding issues continue.

The development comes after several rounds of negotiations between the unions and government representatives failed to produce an immediate resolution, leaving thousands of pupils affected by the industrial action.

The focus now shifts to the implementation of commitments made during the engagements and the conclusion of negotiations on the teachers’ outstanding conditions of service.
