A 45-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to murder a farmer on his farm at Abotia-Dorfor in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.
The suspect, identified as Apeti Afeletey from Fodzoku-Afukpakofe, reportedly attacked the farmer at about 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The farmer was working on his farm when he noticed a shadow behind him. On looking up, he reportedly saw the suspect approaching naked with rasta hair, causing him to raise an alarm.
His cries for help attracted a neighbouring farmer, who alerted community members.
The youth of Abotia subsequently rushed to the scene, rescued the farmer and apprehended the suspect.
The suspect later led the youth to a bush where he had allegedly hidden a motorbike he had used to get to the area. Some of his rasta hair was reportedly found on the motorbike.
He was subsequently taken with the motorbike to the palace of the Chief of Abotia, Togbe Korku Mensah, where his family was contacted.
The family confirmed the suspect’s identity and said he had no known history of mental illness.
According to his uncle, the suspect works at a galamsey site and had returned home about a week earlier for his late mother’s burial.
The uncle said the suspect took his junior brother’s motorbike at about 10:00 a.m. on the day of the incident, claiming he was taking an aunt to the clinic.
His phone was later switched off until about 5:45 p.m., when the family was informed of the alleged attack.
The victim has been taken to the hospital for treatment, while the suspect and the motorbike have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
The incident has left residents of Abotia-Dorfor in fear and panic.
