The Ghana Police Service has arrested Samuel Christopher Osei Anto, the 72-year-old suspect wanted in connection with the murder of George Atuguba and his niece, Irene Atuguba, at NTHC Estate, Sakumono.
The suspect was arrested on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at his hideout in Tikrom, near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, following intelligence gathered by the police.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command confirmed the arrest in a press statement issued on November 2, adding that a firearm and ammunition were recovered during the operation.
According to the police, officers retrieved a Smith & Wesson pistol and seven rounds of live ammunition from the suspect.
“The suspect is currently in police custody assisting investigations, while the recovered firearm and ammunition have been retained as exhibits,” the statement said.
The arrest follows an earlier declaration by the Accra Regional Police Command that Samuel Osei Anto was wanted in connection with the October 30 killings at Sakumono.
Preliminary police investigations have pointed to a possible financial dispute between George Atuguba and the suspect as the motive behind the killings.
In its earlier account, the police said George, 57, had allegedly borrowed GH¢500,000 from Samuel Osei Anto but had failed to repay the money.
The suspect reportedly visited the deceased’s residence with Beatrice Mumuni, 47, to demand repayment on the morning of October 30.
A misunderstanding allegedly ensued, leading to the fatal shooting of George and his 47-year-old niece, Irene Atuguba.
The two were found in a pool of blood at their residence and were later pronounced dead at a hospital. Their bodies were subsequently deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The arrest of Samuel Christopher Osei Anto follows the earlier apprehension of Beatrice Mumuni, who is suspected of leading him to the victims’ residence before the incident.
Police had previously identified Samuel as the principal suspect and appealed to the public for information to assist in locating him.
With both suspects now in police custody, investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths are continuing.
