Ghana is hosting the 60th Annual General Meetings(AGM) of the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA), bringing together energy sector leaders from across the continent to discuss strategies for accelerating electricity market integration and strengthening Africa’s power systems.

The week-long event, taking place from July 27 to 31, 2026, at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, is being held under the patronage of the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor.

Held on the theme, “Accelerating Africa’s Electricity Market Integration: Advancing Regulatory Readiness, Regional Market Development and Strategic Partnerships,” the conference is expected to shape policy discussions on expanding access to reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity across the continent.

The meeting is being organised in collaboration with Ghana’s major power institutions, including the Volta River Authority (VRA), Bui Power Authority (BPA), Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

About 200 chief executives, managing directors, general managers, technical directors and energy experts from APUA member organisations, as well as representatives of regional and international energy institutions, are participating in the event.

The conference will provide a platform for policy dialogue, knowledge sharing and strategic partnerships aimed at addressing key challenges confronting Africa’s electricity sector, including infrastructure deficits, regulatory harmonisation, renewable energy development and investment financing.

A major focus of the discussions will be strengthening cross-border electricity trading, enhancing regulatory frameworks and promoting regional collaboration to accelerate the development of an integrated continental electricity market.

Key activities scheduled during the meetings include the APUA Ordinary General Assembly, the APUA CEOs’ Governance and Leadership Forum, the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) Forum, the ANCEE Steering Committee Informative Meeting, and the APUA-IRENA-UNEZA Capacity Building Session on Energy Transition and Renewable Energy.

The official opening ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, will be streamed live on the social media platforms of the Volta River Authority, APUA and other partner utilities.

Hosting the annual meetings reinforces Ghana’s position as a leading player in Africa’s energy sector and offers the country an opportunity to showcase its achievements in electricity generation, transmission and distribution.

As part of the programme, delegates will undertake technical visits on July 31 to selected power generation facilities and training centres in Akosombo, Akuse, Tema and Bui to gain first-hand insight into Ghana’s electricity infrastructure and operational systems.

Beyond technical discussions, the conference is expected to highlight the critical role of governments, utilities, regulators and the private sector in driving Africa’s industrialisation agenda through reliable and competitive energy systems.

Participants are expected to emphasise that improved access to dependable electricity remains essential for manufacturing, digital transformation, job creation and sustained economic growth, while calling for stronger partnerships to accelerate investment and build a resilient, integrated electricity market across the continent.
