Traders at Enchi in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region have expressed frustration following the demolition of the Enchi market by the Aowin Municipal Assembly to pave the way for the construction of a new market under the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.
The demolition, which took place days ago, has left several traders without shops, stalls and designated spaces to operate their businesses.
Some of the affected traders, who say they have traded at the market for several years, are now uncertain about where to relocate and continue their businesses.
They claim the Assembly failed to adequately engage them or provide an alternative trading space before the demolition.
According to the traders, the exercise has disrupted their livelihoods, with some losing shops, structures and other investments made over the years.
Their concerns came to the fore during a visit to the demolished market by the Member of Parliament for Aowin, Oscar Ofori Larbi, who inspected the site and interacted with some of the affected traders.
The traders appealed to the authorities to urgently provide a temporary trading area where they can operate while construction of the new market is underway.
The MP acknowledged the concerns raised and assured the affected traders that he would engage the Aowin Municipal Assembly to explore the provision of a suitable temporary location to enable them to resume their businesses.
