The National Identification Authority (NIA), in partnership with the Births and Deaths Registry and the Ghana Health Service, has successfully tested a new registration application system for children aged between zero and five years.
The test was conducted on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as part of preparations for the nationwide rollout of the system at health facilities.
The initiative to register children aged 0–5 was first launched in March 2024 but was suspended after the system encountered a major technical challenge shortly after its introduction.
The NIA says the technical difficulties have now been resolved, paving the way for the programme to resume.
Under the initiative, children between zero and five years will be registered at selected hospitals and other health facilities, where they will be issued Ghana Personal Identification Numbers (Ghana PINs).
The system is expected to strengthen the identification and documentation of children from an early age while improving coordination among the NIA, Births and Deaths Registry and the Ghana Health Service.
Following the successful testing, the NIA is expected to commence the full rollout of the registration and issuance of Ghana PINs to children aged 0–5 at health facilities in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the registration of children between six and 14 years in the North East and Upper East Regions will continue in October 2026 when schools reopen.
The exercise forms part of ongoing efforts by the NIA and its partner institutions to expand Ghana’s national identification coverage and ensure that children are captured in the country’s identification system from an early age.
