The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and key stakeholders operating at the country’s airports have announced new measures aimed at eliminating extortion and begging by personnel at airport facilities.
The decision was reached during a high-level stakeholder facilitation meeting held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, to address concerns over unacceptable practices affecting passengers at GACL-managed airports.
As part of the measures, authorities will introduce a “mystery shopping” initiative to identify individuals involved in extortionary activities. Persons found culpable will be publicly exposed through appropriate media channels under a “name and shame” approach designed to promote accountability and deter misconduct.
GACL management warned that staff found engaging in such practices would face disciplinary action and would no longer be permitted to work at any airport or within airport environs.
To strengthen reporting mechanisms, the company has established a dedicated hotline, 0542175636, through which members of the travelling public can report incidents of extortion involving personnel of agencies and service providers operating within airport terminals.
The hotline will receive calls, WhatsApp messages and SMS reports concerning personnel from agencies including the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division), Ghana Police Service, National Security, Port Health, Ghana Airports Company Limited, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, airlines, ground handling companies, private security firms and other service providers.
Passengers making reports have been advised to provide key details, including the date and time of the incident, the name of the officer involved, the agency concerned and the location where the incident occurred.
GACL further reminded travellers that they have the right to request the Airport Identification Card of any person claiming to represent an agency within the airport to verify their identity.
Passengers have also been encouraged to request receipts for all payments made at airport facilities and to report any suspicious conduct through the dedicated reporting channels.
The management of Ghana Airports Company Limited, together with airport stakeholders, appealed for public cooperation in addressing the issue, noting that collective efforts would help protect the reputation of Ghana’s airports and support the vision of positioning Ghana as a preferred aviation hub and leader in airport business in West Africa.
