The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has detained two officials of the Energy Commission as part of investigations into an alleged international drug trafficking operation involving methamphetamine concealed in a charcoal shipment bound for Australia.

The consignment was intercepted by Australian authorities, prompting a joint investigation into how the export was processed and whether proper regulatory procedures were followed before it left Ghana.

According to NACOC, the two officials were taken into custody because of their alleged involvement in the approval process for the charcoal export. The Energy Commission is responsible for issuing permits for charcoal shipments leaving the country.

The agency said the probe is focused on uncovering those behind the suspected trafficking network and establishing whether the export approval process was compromised.

“The two Energy Commission officials were taken into custody to assist with investigations due to their alleged connection to the approval process for the charcoal export.”

NACOC has not released the identities of the detained officials or stated whether criminal charges will be filed. Investigations remain ongoing, with more details expected as the case develops.
