The Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, joined the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in laying wreaths in honour of the Government and people of Rwanda during the commemoration of Kwibuka 32 held at Burma Camp in Accra.
The solemn ceremony, organised by the Rwanda High Commission in Ghana, marked the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
It served as a moment of reflection on one of the darkest chapters in modern history and a renewed call for peace, unity, and human dignity.
Held under the theme “Remember – Unite – Renew,” the event brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, security services, and other dignitaries to honour the victims and reaffirm commitment to preventing the recurrence of genocide and mass atrocities.
A wreath-laying ceremony was performed at the cenotaphs in memory of the victims, symbolising Ghana’s solidarity with Rwanda and its continued support for remembrance and reconciliation efforts.
Delivering the keynote address as Guest of Honour, Mr. Ablakwa stressed that the commemoration should go beyond remembrance to reinforce a collective responsibility to safeguard humanity and protect future generations from similar tragedies.
He also acknowledged Ghana’s historical ties with Rwanda and expressed appreciation for the establishment of a memorial reflecting the shared bonds between the two nations.
The Foreign Affairs Minister further paid tribute to members of the Ghana Armed Forces who served under United Nations peacekeeping operations in Rwanda during the genocide, commending their bravery, professionalism, and commitment to saving lives under extremely difficult conditions.
Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Rosemary Mbabazi, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of remembrance, unity, and renewal as key pillars for sustaining peace, promoting reconciliation, and advancing development.
