President John Dramani Mahama has extended a strong message of support to the Black Stars ahead of their opening World Cup Group L match against Panama in Toronto, assuring the team of the full backing of government and the people of Ghana.
In a statement issued on his behalf by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), the President said the Black Stars carry the hopes, dreams and national pride of more than 30 million Ghanaians as they embark on their fifth World Cup appearance.
He described the team’s qualification for the tournament as a reflection of Ghana’s resilience and fighting spirit, adding that the entire country stands firmly behind the players as they take to the global stage.
The statement also acknowledged the Ghanaian diaspora in Toronto and across North America, urging them to serve as the “12th Man” by turning out in national colours and creating a vibrant atmosphere of support for the team.
At home, the President noted that government had secured official television broadcast rights for the tournament to ensure nationwide access, allowing Ghanaians from Axim to Bawku and Ho to Hamile to follow every moment of the matches.
He encouraged the players to represent the national flag with pride and dedication, urging them to inspire the next generation of footballers across the country.
“Play for the flag. Play for the children dreaming of greatness in your footsteps,” the statement read.
The President expressed confidence that the Black Stars would rise to the occasion and make the nation proud on the global stage, as Ghana begins its World Cup campaign against Panama.
