The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that the results of 2,722 candidates whose 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results have been withheld are undergoing further scrutiny and are expected to be released or cancelled by August 31, 2026, depending on the outcome of investigations.
The Council disclosed this in a press release issued on July 29, 2026, following the release of the provisional results for school candidates.
According to WAEC, “the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been withheld for further scrutiny. The withheld results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of investigations by August 31, 2026.”
The examination body urged affected candidates to check the status of their cases through its irregularities portal.
“Candidates whose results have been cancelled or withheld should visit https://irreg.waecgh.org and click on the withheld/cancelled button on the home page. They will be redirected to the irregularity and investigations page. This page will display reasons for withholding or cancelling the results. For withheld results, the candidates will receive information on the next line of action,” the statement said.
WAEC also noted that heads of schools and proprietors can access information on affected candidates using their results listing login credentials.
The Council’s announcement comes after it completed investigations into reported examination irregularities. It approved the cancellation of subject results for 496 candidates and the cancellation of the entire results of 105 candidates. In addition, subject results of 119 candidates and the entire results of 48 candidates have been withheld pending further investigations.
Overall, 620,243 candidates from 20,789 schools registered for the 2026 BECE, with 3,601 candidates absent from the examination conducted at 2,237 centres nationwide.
WAEC also cautioned candidates and the public against individuals claiming they can alter examination results for a fee.
“The Council wishes to caution all stakeholders to be wary of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee. Candidates are to note that WAEC results are secured and can be authenticated,” the statement added.
