Former Communications Minister and ex-Ablekuma West MP, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has declared her intention to contest for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 elections.
In a statement shared on her official Facebook page on Monday, October 20, 2025, — which coincided with her birthday — Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said her decision stems from a deep conviction to rebuild and reenergize the NPP after what she described as a difficult period of “self-reflection and reorganization.”
She acknowledged that the party is currently facing internal wounds from the 2024 electoral defeat but expressed confidence that it can bounce back stronger.
“We came out bruised, our egos battered. We lie not in a good place. However, as our great tradition has demonstrated over the years, influenced by the spirit of resilience that heralded our birth in Saltpond, we will thrive,” she wrote.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful also took a swipe at the ruling Mahama administration, accusing it of coming to power through “propaganda and deceit,” and vowed to restore public trust in the NPP through credible leadership and renewed unity.
“This caretaker NDC government is there not just because they are preferred, they are there because they lied their way into government, amidst lofty promises, and caused belief in us to wane. But we will revive it,” she asserted.
She described her campaign as a “rescue mission” aimed at reorganizing the NPP from the polling station level upward, with the ultimate goal of reclaiming power in 2028.
Calling for unity across the NPP and among Ghanaians, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful said her experience and commitment position her to serve effectively as General Secretary and to lead the party into a new era of growth and renewal.
