Two police officers have been sentenced to a total of 13 years in prison for narcotics trafficking following a four-year trial at the Tema Circuit Court.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nasiru Amadu, 48, and Corporal Emmanuel Mintah, 43, were found guilty of unlawful possession and conspiracy to traffic narcotic drugs after authorities intercepted a Nissan Navara carrying 541 parcels of Indian hemp on November 19, 2023, near Peki Tsibu.
Investigations revealed that Mintah had been hired by a relative, a known dealer, to transport the drugs and enlisted Amadu to facilitate the operation.
Presiding Judge Aleanor Kakra Barnes Botchway sentenced the officers to 5 and 10 years, respectively, to run concurrently, and imposed a fine of 10,000 penalty units (GH₵120,000) each, with an additional three years in prison if the fine is unpaid.
The court held that the officers unlawfully possessed narcotics for trafficking, in violation of Section 23(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960, and Section 37(2)(b) of the Narcotic Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).
The conviction underscores the continued enforcement against corruption and drug-related offenses within the Ghana Police Service.
