The Ghana Police Service has arrested two individuals in connection with the violence that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
In a statement dated Wednesday, July 23, the police identified the suspects as 46-year-old Musah Muntari, a Station Manager at STC, and 43-year-old businessman Ali Saeed, also known as “Mboma.”
Both suspects are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
“Accra Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the ongoing investigation into the violent incidents and assaults recorded during the Ablekuma North
parliamentary re-run held on Friday, 11th July 2025,” the statement read.
“The public is encouraged to continue cooperating with the Police and to share credible information by calling our emergency numbers 18555 or 191.,” it added.
The statement was signed by Supt. Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region.
The rerun, held across 19 polling stations, was triggered by unresolved verification challenges during the December 2024 general elections, which left the constituency without a Member of Parliament.
Although the New Patriotic Party (NPP) initially opposed the rerun and filed an injunction, the court dismissed the case, clearing the way for the election.
The poll was fraught with violence with NPP’s Hawa Koomson allegedly assaulted and reportedly discharged pepper spray, temporarily halting the voting process.
Later, chaos erupted at the St. Peter’s polling station when suspected political thugs stormed the venue, attacking party agents and journalists. Reports indicated that NPP candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female polling agent suffered facial injuries.
The Accra Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to bringing all perpetrators to justice.
