President John Dramani Mahama has held high-level bilateral talks with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9) in Yokohama, Japan.
The discussions centered on Ghana’s economic rebound, the global push to accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and rising security threats in the Sahel and wider West African region.
President Mahama, in a Facebook post, described the engagement as timely in advancing shared priorities on development, governance, and security.
President Mahama welcomed the Secretary-General’s recognition of Ghana’s leadership within ECOWAS and the African Union, particularly in spearheading regional responses to instability across the Sahel.
He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to collective, African-led solutions to safeguard peace and stability.
On the economy, Mahama updated Mr. Guterres on Ghana’s recovery efforts, noting that the government’s debt restructuring program is advancing steadily to restore long-term financial stability.
He also expressed appreciation to the UNDP for its continuous support to Ghana’s development agenda.
President Mahama stressed the importance of strengthening multilateralism and called for deeper reforms at the UN to enhance inclusivity, representativeness, and effectiveness in tackling global challenges.
