Government has announced the arrival of 100 new 29-seater buses to help ease transport congestion across the country, as part of a broader plan to address recent challenges in the sector.
The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, disclosed this in a post on X on Sunday, April 5, 2026, noting that the buses are part of a total of 300 procured to strengthen public transport.
“In the meantime, 100 29-seater buses have arrived in the country to ease recent road transport challenges. They form part of 300 procured for the purpose. Another batch of 100 will arrive in August with the last batch of 100 arriving in November,” he stated.
The buses are expected to be deployed by Metro Mass Transit Limited to support commuter movement, particularly in areas experiencing high passenger demand.
The intervention comes in the wake of recent transport difficulties across the country, driven largely by rising fuel prices and inadequate vehicles.
Commuters in major cities have in recent weeks faced long queues and increased fares, prompting calls for urgent government action.
The newly arrived buses are reportedly part of a supply arrangement with Egypt, highlighting growing cooperation in vehicle manufacturing and exports between the two countries. The initiative is expected not only to improve transport availability but also strengthen bilateral trade relations.
Earlier, Deputy Minister for Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, had informed Parliament’s Assurance Committee that an initial batch of 100 buses from Egypt was on the way, with plans to significantly expand the national fleet.
She indicated that government, through Metro Mass Transit, is targeting up to 1,000 buses by the end of 2026 or early 2027 as part of a long-term strategy to modernise Ghana’s public transport system and improve service delivery.
The phased arrival of the 300 buses is expected to provide immediate relief to commuters while laying the groundwork for a more efficient, reliable, and accessible transport network nationwide.
