Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that government has secured financial clearance to recruit at least 7,000 teachers across the country to address staffing gaps and rising unemployment among trained graduates.
He said the approval, granted by the Ministry of Finance Ghana, will enable the Ministry of Education to deploy teachers, particularly to underserved and rural communities where shortages remain critical.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Accra, the Minister noted that the recruitment forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the education sector.
“Education remains a key priority of President Mahama’s reset agenda. Government intends to invest heavily in education, in infrastructure, and in the provision of learning resources and learning materials to improve the delivery of our education system,” he said.
He acknowledged concerns over the growing number of unemployed trained teachers, indicating that recent graduates from colleges of education have been awaiting posting.
“I am also well aware that in the last couple of months, a number of students have graduated from our colleges of education, and other institutions that specialise in the development of teachers,” he added.
Mr. Iddrisu stressed that the recruitment process will be conducted in a transparent and competitive manner, targeting graduates from recent cohorts.
“I am happy to note and announce that the Ministry of Education has received clearance and approval from the Ministry of Finance for the recruitment of teachers across the country. We will be recruiting at least 7,000 teachers… We want the process to be open, transparent, and competitive,” he stated.
He further explained that graduates from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 cohorts will be eligible to apply.
“Graduates from the 2023, 2024, 2025 cohort may apply for placement to be teachers across the country,” he said.
According to the Minister, priority will be given to applicants willing to serve in deprived areas where teacher shortages are most pronounced.
