The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled a by-election for the Tamale Central Constituency on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim.
In a statement dated Tuesday, August 19, the EC confirmed that the parliamentary seat became vacant under Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution.
Nominations for prospective candidates will be accepted from Monday, September 8, to Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the Tamale Metropolitan Office of the Commission, daily between 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
According to the EC, interested candidates are required to download nomination forms from the EC’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) between August 19 and September 10, 2025.
Each form must be signed by two registered voters as proposer and seconder and supported by 18 additional registered voters in the constituency.
Candidates must also attach two recent passport-sized photographs with a red background, clearly showing their full face and ears.
The filing fee for the by-election is GHC 10,000 per candidate. To encourage participation from underrepresented groups, female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) are required to pay a reduced fee of GHC 7,500.
All completed nomination forms must be submitted in quadruplicate and can be delivered personally by the candidate or by their proposer or seconder.
Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim, who also served as Ghana’s Environment Minister, tragically died in the August 6, 2025, Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
He was among eight officials who perished in the crash, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and other high-ranking public officials.
The EC has called on all stakeholders and the public to adhere to the laid-out procedures to ensure a smooth, transparent, and peaceful electoral process.
