A senior member of the Movement for Change and former New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Solomon Owusu, has taken a swipe at former President John Agyekum Kufuor, accusing him of contributing to the party’s current woes.
Mr. Owusu’s comments follow recent remarks by former President Kufuor, who expressed disappointment over being sidelined by the party he once led.
During a courtesy call by NPP flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong, Mr. Kufuor said, “I don’t understand why my own party, the NPP, has sidelined me,” lamenting his exclusion from key party engagements, including a recent National Council meeting.
Kufuor, who served as President from 2001 to 2008, said the disregard for founding figures like himself reflects a deeper lack of appreciation and unity within the NPP as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
But Solomon Owusu, speaking in an interview on Accra FM, dismissed the former President’s concerns, accusing him of hypocrisy and blaming him for the party’s decline.
“President Kufuor has never supported Alan. He is the cause of the NPP’s downfall. He should stop pretending,” Owusu said.
“He sat by while Akufo-Addo and his people destroyed the party and the country over the past eight years. Even during Akufo-Addo’s presidency, Kufuor wasn’t paid his salary. He stood aside while people who sacrificed for him were kicked out of the party.”
Owusu’s comments add to the growing tension and internal strife within the NPP, which is currently grappling with leadership challenges and factionalism as it strategizes for a comeback in 2028.
