The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 29-year-old woman, Augustina Adoma, for allegedly setting fire to her ex-boyfriend’s property and stabbing him during a violent altercation at Sowutuom in Accra.
In a statement dated Wednesday, July 2, signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the police explained that the suspect, who is currently unemployed, visited her former partner, 30-year-old driver Emmanuel Otabil, unannounced on the morning of Thursday, June 26, 2025.
Upon finding Mr. Otabil in the company of another woman, Ms. Adoma allegedly poured a bucket of water over them and seized his Samsung mobile phone before leaving.
Later that afternoon, at around 4:00 pm, Ms. Adoma, according to the police statement, is said to have returned to Mr. Otabil’s kiosk while he was away.
Using a duplicate key, she allegedly set fire to his belongings, including a mattress, carpet, blankets, and bedsheets.
Later that evening, a confrontation reportedly occurred when Mr. Otabil confronted Ms. Adoma about the arson attack and demanded the return of his phone.
During the heated exchange, Ms. Adoma allegedly grabbed a knife belonging to a nearby orange seller and stabbed him in the left side of his chest.
Mr. Otabil was initially rushed to Race Course Hospital but was later transferred to Lapaz Community Hospital, and subsequently to the University of Ghana Medical Centre, where he underwent emergency surgery.
He is currently receiving treatment and responding well.
A portion of the statement noted, “A confrontation ensued later in the evening when the victim confronted the suspect about the incident and demanded the return of his phone. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly took a knife belonging to an orange seller and stabbed the victim in the left side of his chest.”
“The victim, who was initially rushed to Race Course Hospital, was later transferred to Lapaz Community Hospital and then to the University of Ghana Medical Centre, where he underwent emergency surgery. He is currently on admission and responding to treatment.”
Police investigations led to the recovery of the stolen phone, and Ms. Adoma was arrested at the Tesano Police Station, where she had reportedly gone to submit a medical report related to a separate assault complaint she had filed against Mr. Otabil.
The case is still under active investigation. Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the public to avoid acts of personal vengeance, especially in domestic or relationship-related disputes.
