A tragic accident in the Volta Region claimed the life of a six-year-old girl on Sunday, February 1, 2026, after she drowned in an irrigation pond at Sonitra, a suburb of Kpetoe.
The child, identified as Sarah Ahiafor, had gone with other minors to the pond to wash clothes when the incident occurred.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), personnel from the Kpetoe Fire Station responded swiftly to a distress call around 1:40 p.m. under the leadership of Assistant Station Officer David Dzakah.
The rescue team conducted a search operation and retrieved Sarah from the water, but unfortunately, all efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
“The GNFS advises parents and guardians to ensure that children do not visit or engage in activities around ponds, irrigation sites, and other open water bodies without adult supervision,” the service said in a statement.
The child’s body was handed over to the Ghana Police Service at the scene for preservation and further investigations. Preliminary reports indicate that the tragedy occurred while Sarah was unsupervised, along with other children, at the irrigation pond.
The Fire Service expressed condolences to the family and reiterated its commitment to public safety, emphasizing the dangers posed by open water bodies and the need for vigilant supervision of minors.
