Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the 52-year-old Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, has officially announced his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The wealthy businessman and seasoned politician made the declaration during a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
Dr. Acheampong, who has deep roots in the church, said it was only proper to begin his presidential journey by seeking the church’s blessings, prayers, and moral support.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Dr. Acheampong explained that his decision to run is grounded in weeks of nationwide consultations with party delegates and grassroots supporters.
According to him, these engagements revealed a strong appetite for new, innovative leadership within the party.
Dr. Acheampong, widely seen as one of the sharpest young political minds within the NPP, believes his blend of private sector success, political experience, and modern approach to governance makes him the ideal candidate to lead the party into the next elections.
The NPP is set to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.
The date was agreed upon by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) following a meeting on June 17, 2025.
Dr. Acheampong’s entry into the race adds further excitement to an already competitive contest, with several prominent party figures expected to battle for the party’s top slot.
Among the notable contenders are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Mampong MP Addai Nimo, and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
Dr. Acheampong’s combination of youth, wealth, political experience, and a reputation for result-driven leadership has positioned him as a serious contender, with many party insiders predicting he could significantly shape the direction and tone of the race.
The upcoming NPP primary is considered crucial as the party works to rebuild and reposition itself following its loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections.
The flagbearer chosen will be expected to galvanize the party and mount a strong campaign to reclaim power in 2028.
