Railway workers across Ghana are preparing to grind operations to a halt as the Railway Workers Union (RWU) announces a nationwide strike and peaceful protest set for Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
The move, according to the Union, is a response to nearly a year of unpaid salaries and benefits, which it says has left families in severe hardship.
Workers have reportedly gone without pay since October 2024, leading to growing financial crises, broken homes, health complications such as strokes, and children being forced out of school due to lack of funds.
Union leaders expressed disappointment that despite repeated appeals to the Ministry of Transport and other government bodies, no steps have been taken to resolve the matter through negotiation, mediation, or arbitration, as required under the Labour Act.
“If by Monday, September 22, 2025, no concrete action is taken, we will proceed with our strike and demonstration effective September 30,” the Union’s General Secretary, Benjamin Essuman, warned in a letter to the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander.
The industrial action will see railway workers from Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa march through Accra in a mass procession. The demonstration is scheduled to begin at the Ministry of Transport, continue to Parliament where a petition will be presented, move to the Ghana Railway Development Authority, and end at the TUC-Ghana headquarters.
The Union has assured the police that the protest will be peaceful, requesting security support to protect both participants and the public.
