Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has reassured the public regarding the health of Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, dispelling circulating rumors about her condition. Ablakwa confirmed that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is in good health and will soon be resuming her official duties.
The Vice President had sought medical attention abroad following a sudden illness after her official engagements on Friday, March 28, 2025. She was initially treated at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) before traveling for further medical care. Despite her recovery, rumors of her passing began to spread, causing widespread concern.
Addressing Ghanaians in Lagos, Nigeria, on Sunday, April 6, 2025, Minister Ablakwa emphasized that the outpouring of prayers from both local and international Ghanaians played a significant role in her recovery.
“I want to reassure everyone that our dear mother, the first female Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, is doing exceptionally well,” he said. “Your prayers—both from Ghanaians at home and abroad—have truly worked. I have personally heard from her, and I can confidently say she is in good health.”
Ablakwa also urged the public to disregard the “vicious and unGhanaian evil propaganda” that has been circulating about the Vice President’s health, calling for unity and support in this time of uncertainty.
“The malicious rumors should be ignored. Our Vice President is recovering well, and very soon, she will be back to serving Ghana, continuing to make us all proud. She is a true inspiration to our young girls and women, proving that there is nothing women cannot achieve,” Ablakwa added.
Additionally, sources close to the presidency revealed that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has been advised by her doctors to take a three-week medical leave to aid her full recovery. Her leave follows her brief stay at the University of Ghana Medical Centre and her subsequent treatment abroad.
