Mahama orders GH₵2 reduction in diesel price to cushion consumers

President John Dramani Mahama has directed a temporary GH₵2.00 reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel as part of measures to ease the burden of rising fuel costs on Ghanaians.

The directive, announced by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, follows a Cabinet decision and builds on a similar intervention introduced in April 2026.

According to the statement, the reduction will take effect from Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and will remain in force for one month, unless reviewed earlier by the government.

The temporary measure is aimed at cushioning consumers against rising fuel prices, preventing increases in transport fares, containing inflationary pressures, and reducing the impact of higher fuel costs on the overall cost of living.

Government said the intervention forms part of its broader efforts to protect households and businesses while sustaining the country’s economic recovery.

The Presidency also indicated that it will continue to closely monitor developments in the international energy market and implement additional policy measures where necessary to safeguard the interests of Ghanaians.

The announcement comes amid fluctuations in global oil prices, with government seeking to minimise the effect of external market conditions on the domestic economy.
