The Majority Caucus in Parliament has pledged to probe the alleged financial mismanagement under the former Akufo-Addo administration, with a strong focus on transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.
Speaking at the opening of the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament on Tuesday, May 27, Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, announced that Parliament would soon begin investigating how funds were expended during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He emphasized that public confidence in Parliament depends on lawmakers’ willingness to demand accountability from those who previously held power.
The Majority Leader also hinted at renewed scrutiny of high-profile controversies that defined the previous administration.
He highlighted the unresolved Agyapa Royalties transaction—a deal to monetise Ghana’s mineral royalties—and the \$190 million Power Distribution Services (PDS) scandal, which led to the collapse of a major power sector reform.
“During this caucus, the Majority will spearhead a rigorous pursuit of accountability in Ghana’s public financial management. We will demand a full-scale parliamentary investigation into the handling of COVID-19 expenditure to ensure transparency in how emergency funds were utilised,” he stated.
“Additionally, this House will revisit the unresolved Agyapa Royalties deal and require a detailed update on the $190 million PDS scandal, a case of alleged fraud in power distribution…under the previous administration,” he added.
