Voting in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary has officially closed nationwide, with sorting and collation of ballots currently underway across the more than 300 designated polling centres.
About 211,000 delegates were expected to participate in the exercise, which the party considers a crucial step in selecting its flagbearer for the 2028 presidential elections.
The contest features five aspirants: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyepong.
The election was largely peaceful, with a visible security presence throughout the day. Inspector-General of Police, Christian Yohonu Tettey, toured some polling centres to personally assess the process and ensure calm and order, reinforcing the Ghana Police Service’s role as the sole security agency for the exercise.
Party officials reported generally strong voter turnout and smooth operations, attributing the orderly conduct to early logistical deployment and adherence to party guidelines.
However, there were isolated reports at some centres that a number of delegates declined to vote, citing the absence of monetary inducements, an issue party sources described as minimal and not disruptive to the overall process.
As counting continues, the NPP leadership has reiterated calls for unity and restraint, stressing that cohesion after the primary will be essential as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
