Deputy CEO of the Ghana Gaming Commission, Lamtiig Apanga, has criticised the tone of the NPP presidential primaries, saying the months-long campaign has been dominated by personal attacks rather than substantive policy discussions.
Speaking on Channel One TV ahead of the party’s January 31 primaries, Apanga said voters and delegates “would expect that some policy ideas, some leadership ideas, some challenging thoughts would have been the main driving force between the candidates. But unfortunately, we’ve had a wholesale of insults, people throwing attacks at each other, character assassination.”
He noted that even candidates who have personally refrained from engaging in attacks have not condemned the actions of their supporters, which he said amounts to a “subtle endorsement.”
Apanga stressed the importance of candidates demonstrating a higher standard of leadership. “That is what would mark a distinguished leader, that this leader is different and distinct from the rest,” he added.
He further called for campaigns to focus on solutions and policy proposals that could positively impact the country. “You want to see some level of quality leadership debates that produce ideas, challenging ideas, policy ideas that would propel this country to the next level,” he said.
The primaries are scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, with all candidates having signed a peace pact committing to a campaign free of personal attacks and focused on policy discussions.
