Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, has officially declared his intention of contesting the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer slot.
He made this announcement during a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, where he sought their blessings and support for his presidential campaign.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Dr. Acheampong stated that his intention follows considerable discussions with a team that spent several weeks engaging party delegates across the country.
He noted that the responses indicated a strong desire for new leadership within the party—something he feels equipped to provide.
The NPP is set to hold its presidential primary on January 31, 2026, as part of the preparations for the upcoming elections. This contest is shaping up to be quite competitive, with several key figures already expressing interest in running.
Among the notable contenders are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey, former Education Minister and Bosomtwe MP Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Mampong MP Addai Nimo, and ex-NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The date for the primary and the start of nominations were approved by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) after a meeting on June 17, 2025.
