Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has stressed the importance of rebuilding internal unity, discipline, and structure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
In a tweet on Thursday, June 19, Mr. Boamah stated that party should not focus on just producing a flagbearer for the 2028 elections, but focus on strengthening the party.
He said, “The New Patriotic Party (NPP) needs a strong party, well organized and disciplined to produce a President not just a Flagbearer.”
Mr. Boamah’s remarks come amid heightened internal debate and reflection following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
While the party has scheduled its next presidential primary for January 31, 2026, concerns persist among members who say the report on the causes of the 2024 loss is yet to be shared.
Meanwhile, more than 60 NPP Members of Parliament, on Thursday, June 19 visited Dr. Bawumia’s private office to pledge their support and encourage him to contest the 2028 presidential race.
Although Dr. Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer, has not officially declared his candidacy, he is seen by many as the frontrunner.
Adding to the unfolding dynamics, the camp hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong said their team is unfazed by recent endorsements of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by over 60 party MPs.
The NPP’s leadership has set January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries — a decision ratified by the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council to allow ample time for internal campaigning and reconciliation.
Among the MPs present at the meeting with Dr. Bawumia were key party figures including Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Sammi Awuku, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, Habib Iddrisu, and Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah.
So far, four prominent party members have declared their intentions to contest the flagbearer slot: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
