Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has formally entered the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential race, filing his nomination forms at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
The event turned into a political spectacle as hundreds of enthusiastic supporters clad in party colours thronged the premises. With brass band music, chants, and placards, the crowd transformed the filing into a display of grassroots energy and loyalty to the former Vice President. He was accompanied by his wife, Samira Bawumia, party executives, and loyalists.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to the NPP leadership and rank-and-file members for their support. He pledged to run a clean and issues-based campaign, anchored on unity and service.
He outlined his vision to build a modern, inclusive Ghana through digital innovation, industrialisation, economic transformation, and job creation for the youth.
“This election is an election not only for flagbearer of our party but an election for the soul of this party.I Mahamudu Bawumia offer myself to lead the party for the 2028 elections because I have the integrity, competence, compassion, humility and the values not only required to lead this party but to lead this country,” he declared.
Dr. Bawumia becomes one of the frontrunners in what is shaping up to be a competitive contest. Other aspirants who have filed include former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong and Abetifi MP and former Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong.
The race also features one of his strongest rivals, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.
Nominations for the NPP flagbearer race opened on July 29 and closed on August 28, 2025.
The party will publish the full list of aspirants on October 8 before balloting, with the election slated for January 31, 2026.
