The Lawra Municipality in the Upper West Region has been thrown into mourning following the passing of its newly appointed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji Adams Muaza.
Alhaji Muaza passed away on the morning of Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, where he had been receiving medical care. His death comes barely two months after his appointment and confirmation as MCE.
The news has sent shockwaves across the Lawra Municipality, which is still reeling from the tragic drowning of seven students in the Black Volta River at Dikpe just weeks ago.
Alhaji Muaza was appointed as MCE for Lawra on April 5, 2025, and received overwhelming endorsement from the assembly members, securing 33 ‘yes’ votes against 8 ‘no’ during his confirmation on April 22.
However, he had been battling ill health and was yet to fully assume office before his untimely demise.
A former educationist, Alhaji Muaza Adams served as the Upper West Regional Coordinator for Physical Education under the Ghana Education Service (GES) and was widely respected for his dedication to education and public service.
He was an alumnus of Wa Senior High School and NJA College of Education, Wa, and held a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Cape Coast.
Beyond his professional life, Alhaji Muaza had a strong background in politics, having served as the Deputy Constituency Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Lawra since 2017. He succeeded Mr. Jacob Dery of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as MCE for the area.
The Lawra Constituency Chairman of the NDC, Joshua Lotaa, confirmed his passing and revealed that arrangements are underway to transport the body to Lawra for burial and final rites.
Tributes continue to pour in from political figures, colleagues, and residents, describing the late MCE as a humble, hardworking, and dedicated leader who was poised to bring positive change to Lawra.
