The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed deep sorrow following the passing of former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a visionary leader whose influence transformed the lives of Ghanaian women and children.
In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey dated Thursday, October 23, 2025, the NDC paid glowing tribute to the late Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings for her decades-long advocacy for gender equality, education, and economic empowerment through the 31st December Women’s Movement.
“Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings was a remarkable woman whose lifelong commitment to the empowerment of women and children has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s history,” the statement noted.
It added that her work expanded opportunities for women across the country and strengthened the foundation for social inclusion.
The NDC highlighted her pivotal role in the party’s formation, noting that despite political differences in later years, her place as one of the party’s founding figures remains undeniable.
“As one of the founding pillars of the NDC, Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings played an instrumental role in shaping the ideals and identity of our great party,” the statement read.
Mr. Kwetey recalled that during the party’s celebration of the birth anniversary of its founder, Jerry John Rawlings, on June 22, 2025, the NDC publicly reaffirmed Nana Konadu’s place as the “Founding Mother” of the party — an acknowledgment made while she was still alive.
The party expressed gratitude that this recognition was given before her passing, describing it as a meaningful gesture that underlined the NDC’s appreciation of her enduring contributions.
“We take comfort in knowing that this acknowledgment was made while she was still with us,” the statement added.
The NDC extended its condolences to the Rawlings family, especially her children, and all those mourning the loss of the former First Lady.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at age 76, was celebrated for her bold advocacy, leadership, and dedication to women’s empowerment.
She was the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, which championed women’s education, enterprise, and rights across Ghana.
She was the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and mother of four — Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina, and Kimathi.
The NDC concluded its statement by praying for her eternal rest, describing her as a “trailblazer whose spirit will continue to inspire generations of Ghanaian women.”
